Day 1. Broome

Arrive in Broome and be transferred to your luxurious hotel. Enjoy your day at leisure to explore this fascinating place. Broome suffered numerous attacks by the Japanese during World War II, and there are a number of remarkable and poignant sites to visit in this historic pearl diving town. Make your way to the Sunset Bar and Grill at your resort to see one of Australia’s best sunsets. This evening, enjoy dinner at your leisure before your fascinating journey into the Kimberley commences.

Day 2. Boab Prison Tree, Gibb River Road, Tunnel Creek, Windjana Gorge

Your day starts with a visit to the fascinating Boab Prison Tree, once used by early police patrols as a standing point for prisoners as they walked to Derby. Journey along the Gibb River Road, stretching between Broome and Kununurra. Traverse the wild heart of the Kimberley and pass spectacular landscapes of intensely coloured ranges, dramatic gorges, deep rock pools and tumbling waterfalls. Turn off to visit Tunnel Creek, a natural tunnel carved through the Napier Range. Torch in hand, wade through the cool waters and emerge to the sight of a tranquil oasis. Continue to Windjana Gorge, where sheer cliffs tower above glistening white sands. Admire the ancient marine fossils embedded in the gorge walls and scour the river banks for a glimpse of the freshwater crocodiles that laze here.

Day 3. Bell Gorge, Hiking and Swimming

Journey on the Gibb River Road into the King Leopold Range National Park. Covering more than 900,000 acres, it is also home to Bell Gorge, where stunning cliffs surround a series of spectacularly tiered waterholes. Sitting approximately 300 metres above sea level, Bell Gorge is an idyllic natural spot for swimming and photography. Take a dip below the cascading waterfall that feeds the lower pool and then go bird watching.

Day 4. Galvans Gorge, Wandjina Art, Barnett River Gorge, Drysdale River Station

Venture across the sweeping landscapes of Kimberley cattle country to discover some of the secluded gorges that seem to be caught in time. Be spellbound by the seductive scenery of Galvans Gorge as you stroll to an ancient waterhole framed by boab trees. Witness how the gorge walls house their own magic as you view ancient Aboriginal rock art. There’s also the opportunity to take a refreshing swim before heading to nearby Barnett River Gorge, where you’ll enjoy a picnic under a canopy of paperbark trees. Jump in for another swim or just relax admiring the scenery and abundant birdlife. Back in the 4WD, turn off the Gibb River Road and follow the scenic stretches of the Kalumburu Road. Tonight, stay at the Drysdale River Station.

Day 5. Mitchell Plateau, King Edward River, Wandjina Art, Bradshaw Art - Gwion Gwion

Ford the Drysdale River before heading up the Kalumburu Road into the remote yet strikingly beautiful Mitchell Plateau. Arrive at King Edward River, where you can take a refreshing swim in its inviting waters. Journey onwards, traversing a landscape of Livistona palm forests and dramatic rock formations dotted with peaceful waterholes and cascading falls. This timeless land also hides some of the most impressive examples of Wandjina and Bradshaw Art - Gwion Gwion. The Kimberley’s rock art is arguably some of the world’s oldest, with evidence suggesting the earliest occupation in the region dates back 50,000 to 60,000 years ago. Your guide will help you discern the myths and traditions that are captured in the rock faces. For the next two nights, experience Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge, with its brand new Ungolan Pavilion, where you can relax in the lounge, treat yourself to a drink or read up on the local culture.

Day 6. Mitchell Falls, Helicopter Flight

Spend an enchanting day discovering one of the world’s true wilderness regions, blessed with a treasure trove of ancient Aboriginal rock art and beautiful waterfalls. Where available, you’ll be joined by local Aboriginal guides who will give you a deeper understanding of this sacred land. Set off for a guided hike to Little Mertens Falls, where you’ll encounter Aboriginal rock art that few people have seen, offering a unique insight into life in the ancient Kimberley. Stop at Big Mertens Falls before arriving at the awe-inspiring Mitchell Falls. There’s time for a swim in the pools above the falls, or alternatively, simply lay back, relax and watch the beautiful resident wildlife. You’ll then take off for a spectacular helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls and the surrounding wilderness back to the vehicle. If you prefer, you can hike back with your guide. Return to your wonderful wilderness lodge, where you can unwind in style and reflect on the day’s amazing experiences with fellow travellers. Enjoy a three-course dinner before gathering around a camp fire to relax below the expansive star-studded sky.

Day 7. Mitchell Plateau, Gibb River Road, Home Valley Station

Rejoin the iconic Gibb River Road and ford the mighty Durack River before arriving at Home Valley Station. Upon arrival at this immense cattle property, you will be astounded by the spellbinding scenery that captivated audiences in Baz Luhrmann’s movie ‘Australia’, including the imposing yet strikingly beautiful backdrop of the Cockburn Range. Here you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and an overnight stay in this inspirational setting.

Day 8. Home Valley Station, El Questro Wilderness Park, Emma Gorge

Learn about the Indigenous training program and the history of the Kimberley’s cattle stations on a tour of Home Valley Station. You will also gain insight into the work that the Indigenous Land Corporation - ILC do here and discover the amazing scenery where the movie ‘Australia’ was filmed. Later, cross the Pentecost River to beautiful El Questro Wilderness Park, covering a staggering one million acres of some of Australia’s most pristine wilderness. Soak in the delectable hot pools of Zebedee Springs and visit the station township. Tonight, absorb the serene surroundings before indulging in a delicious dinner with your fellow travellers.

Day 9. El Questro, Wyndham, Parry’s Lagoon

After a delicious breakfast, continue exploring the remarkable El Questro Wilderness Park. Hike to the picturesque Emma Gorge and indulge in a revitalising swim or stay and relax by the beautiful resort in tranquil surroundings. Afterwards, head to Wyndham and view the breathtaking Cambridge Gulf from the spectacular Five Rivers Lookout. Enjoy lunch at an iconic outback pub before visiting Parry’s Lagoon, a bird watcher’s paradise.

Day 10. Kununurra, Freedom of Choice

Explore the beauty of Kununurra with your selected sightseeing activity. Perhaps travel to Lake Argyle and explore one of the most stunning river systems in Australia with a cruise along the mighty Ord River. Alternatively, perhaps board a purpose-built airboat and arrive at a location filled with stunning scenery. Another option is to tour the agricultural highlights of Kununurra, including a tour of Diversion Dam, the Pumphouse and Ivanhoe Crossing, as well as a tour of the Hoochery Rum Distillery and learning about hybrid seed production. This evening, spend your time at leisure.

Day 11. Purnululu National Park, Echidna Chasm

Journey deep into Purnululu National Park, a spectacular wilderness region that is home to some of the country’s most striking geological formations. Travel the Spring Creek Track and discover the magnitude of Purnululu for yourself. Hike to Echidna Chasm, a spectacular natural cleft in the rock. Narrow in width with walls reaching 100 metres tall, Echidna Chasm is a must-see. Continue on to APT’s award-winning wilderness lodge.

Day 12. Piccaninny Creek, Cathedral Gorge

Walk along Piccaninny Creek, then stop in the natural amphitheatre of Cathedral Gorge, a spacious cavern where the acoustics are astounding. Marvel at the beehive domes as your guide brings the natural history of the range to life. You may like to experience an optional scenic helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle Range - own expense. As the sun sets, savour the sight that the fading light creates.

Day 13. Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing

Continue on your 4WD adventure towards Fitzroy Crossing. En route, visit the old gold mining town of Halls Creek and stop to see China Wall.

Day 14. Geikie Gorge, Broome

Explore magnificent Darngku - Geikie Gorge, and board a unique cruise before returning to Broome. Enjoy a Farewell Dinner at Cable Beach Club’s Sunset Bar and Grill this evening.

Day 15. Horizontal Falls, Depart Broome

Start your day with a spectacular half-day scenic seaplane flight to Horizontal Falls. Described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world”, explore the astounding falls on a high-powered, exhilarating boat ride. A real highlight of your journey, witness the intense 12-metre tidal currents rushing through two narrow coastal gorges. Afterwards, enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure before being transferred to the airport for your flight home.
